Scaling & Root Planing

Our experienced, dentist, Dr. Jeffrey Turner, and the team at University Park Family Dentistry offer scaling and root planing in South Bend, Indiana, as an easy way to address periodontal disease. This treatment can often be completed in one or two visits to our office and we invite you to call 574-272-4441 for more information.

If you have periodontal disease that has become more severe, our dentist and team typically recommend scaling and root planing. This treatment is a deep cleaning treatment that removes damaging bacteria from beneath the gumline.

The first step of this treatment is called scaling. During this step, our dentist and team remove plaque and tartar, also known as dental calculus, from the teeth. This prevents bacteria from establishing colonies and gaining further hold in your mouth.

The second step is root planing. The roots of the teeth are thoroughly cleaned as we remove bacteria and smooth the areas to prevent infection or inflammation.

Our dentist and team usually use local anesthesia during this treatment to help your experience be as comfortable as possible. We may also suggest splitting the treatment into multiple visits so that one area of the mouth can be focused on at a time. Scaling and root planing is sometimes used in conjunction with other periodontal treatments, such as antibiotic treatments, to help us achieve the best results. Our dentist will discuss the treatment plans with you so you can get the most out of periodontal treatments and halt the disease. We invite you to learn more about scaling and root planing by contacting our dental office. We look forward to hearing from you.
